History Stroehmann Bakeries was started by Federick G. Stroehmann. Federick was born in Germany and immigrated to Wheeling, West Virginia at the age of sixteen. He began working for a small local bakery. Federick eventually married the owner's daughter and took over the bread company in 1892. He produced the bread under the name, "Mother's Made Bread."
Federick G. Stroehmann took pleasure in making bread in the old-fashioned Pennsylvania Dutch way. The bread was delivered to the
consumers by horse and carriage.
In 1918, Federick added a second bakery in Huntington, West Virginia. Upon the rise of World War I, "Mother's Made Bread"
began supply bread to the army training camps. The increased demand caused Frederick Stroehmann
to open a third bakery in Ashland, Kentucky.
In 1922, Federick sold his three bakeries to United Bakeries. Frederick's two sons did not want to see their family's bread just die off.
In 1924, both of Frederick's sons bought a bakery in Williamsport, Pennsylvania and renamed it, "Stroehmann Brothers Bakery."
In 1927, the bakery introduced a new product- sliced white bread. To go along with the new product and old-fashion bread style,
the company created Grampa Stroehmann.
In 1988, Stroehmann Bakeries was named "Baker of the Year." In the 1980s, Stroehmann Bakeries became the largest in the Northeast, and sixth largest in the United States.
