WEST ROCKPORT - Flora P. Winchenbach, 80, died Sunday, January 27, 2002, at her home after a brief illness.
Born in East Friendship, July 8, 1921, she was the daughter of Enok and Anna Traurum Pikkarainen. She was educated in Friendship schools.
January 1st, 1942, she married Robert L. Winchenbach in Rockland. The couple resided on Court Street in Rockland more than 20 years, before moving to their Park Street home here, in 1965.
In earlier years, Mrs. Winchenbach worked at the Thorndike Hotel, Samoset Resort and Cedar Crest Motel.
She was a member of the Rockland Congregational Church and the Ladies Guild of the church, Rockport Garden Club, The Finnish / American Society, Senior Citizens of Union, Evening Extension of West Rockport and the West Rockport Cemetery Association.
An avid gardener, she kept beautiful flower gardens at her home. She also took great pleasure in her home, her family, keeping bird feeders, watching the birds, crocheting and reading.
Mrs. Winchenbach was pre-deceased by one daughter Cheryl Ann Reed in 1976; two sisters, Laina "Peggy" Lahja Grandstorm and Anna May Sutela. Besides her husband of 60 years, she is survived by two sons, Steven R. Winchenbach and his wife Shirley of Lisbon, Bruce C. Winchenbach of Waldoboro; four daughters, Elaine F. Burge of Winthrop, Linda C. Grant of Rockland, Angela Lynn Winchenbach of West Rockport, Mickie L. Hoffman and her husband Ryan of Huntington, NY; ten grandchildren, Kevin Burge, Alan Burge, Gregory Smart, Todd Winchenbach, Mariann Gamage, Katherine Winchenbach, Rachel Wandell, Bruce Winchenbach, Jr., Robert Winchenbach, Timothy Winchenbach; four great-grandchildren, Jamie Burge, Brandon Burge, Michaela Winchenbach, Gregory Smart, Jr. as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A celebration of Mrs. Winchenbach' life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 31st, at the Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Dr. D. Elizabeth Mauro will officiate. Interment will follow in the West Rockport Cemetery.
