Frank's father, German immigrant Leopold Schmidt owned the Centennial Brewery in Butte, Montana. After moving in 1896 to Tumwater, Washington, he started the Capital Brewing Company, which later became the Olympia Brewing Company. Many of Leopold's descendants worked for the brewery.
