Elva was born in Seattle on June 14, 1924, to Albert and Lulu Wickham Ingalls. She grew up in a house across the street from the University of Washington and often said the UW campus was her playground as a girl. She was married to Peter Schmidt for 69 years. Peter spotted her at an Alpha Delta Phi fraternity function and after the boy she was dating was drafted, they soon became a couple. But marriage would have to wait until 1945, after Peter's return from the Pacific in World War II.

What a life she had after marrying Peter. They first found themselves in Michigan while Peter was studying naval architecture at the University. From there, they went to San Diego, which they always thought of as a second home. Peter worked at National Steel & Shipbuilding while Elva stayed busy with two little girls. Returning to Seattle, Peter started MARCO in 1953. Elva enjoyed the travels that MARCO brought them, especially life in Chile. They shared a love of classical music, opera, orchestral and chamber music as well as sailboat racing and cruising the waters of Puget Sound in their PC and then CAL 40, Olympian I and II.

But for all the travels and adventures, Elva most enjoyed being at home. An art major in college, Elva had an eye for beautifying her home, flower arranging and gardening, and she always had sewing projects going. Her family smiles to think it was good Elva loved children, because she had five of them!

A devoted wife and loving mother, Elva is survived by her husband Peter, older sister Louise Ingalls, children Mimi Fielding, Jill Crowson, Janet Mano, Hans Schmidt. And she was Granny to thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beautiful son, Peter Leopold, who died much too young in a bicycle accident while the family was living in Via del Mar, Chile.

Everyone who knew Elva loved her. She was gracious and kind to all.

    We will miss her.
