  	Merton M. Whitted, 85, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is in the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. It will be followed by the Father Edward J. Bader Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Chalice Service. Memorials may be made to the church or to Alleman High School. Mr. Whitted was born Oct. 8, 1915, in Geneseo, the son of Richard and Albertina Masengarb Whitted. He married Dr. Betty Klein, May 15, 1948 in Rock Island. He had been an alderman and served five terms as mayor of Geneseo. Mert was listed as a Leading Man of the United States of America in 1965. Mert had retired from the Caterpillar Corp., Davenport plant in 1982, where he had worked as an engineer. In earlier years he had worked for Elmer Wagle Appliances, Geneseo. He was a WW II Army Air Force veteran and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He received several decorations including the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars and five overseas bars. Mert was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, where he had been an usher for many years. He was a member of the Father Betson Council, Knights of Columbus 11977, Moline and the Loras Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Davenport. He was a life member of Moline American Legion Post 246, past commander and life member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 5083, Geneseo and a member of Rock Island County Voiture 40 and 8. He also was a member of the Rock Island County Historical Society. Mert was a musician who prior to WW II played in the Farmall Band, Grotto Band, Midwest Concert Band, Maple City Band and traveled over the road with his own orchestra, The Imperial Four. Following his return from the war, he played with several area bands. He currently was the drummer for the American Legion Post 246 Honor Guard, providing services for veteran's funerals. He is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Michael of Schaumberg, Ill. and three grandchildren. (Rock Island Argus, May 3, 2001)
