| 2201 | Dr. Clinton Frederick "Fred" Lavender died November 5, 2013 in Panama City, Florida, at 91 years, after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Jeanne Lavender, devoted father of Jane/Bob, Mary/Milton, and Patricia. He is also survived by his adored grandchildren, Anne and Beth/James, Emma, Clark/Shanna and Nathan, and great-granddaughter Madeline, and by his protégé, Maya. He was predeceased by Mary Ann Lavender, his first wife and Anne, his second daughter. Fred was a founding partner in the first pediatric medical practice in Sandusky, Ohio, and was recognized and respected for decades of professional and volunteer service in Sandusky and in Chipley, Florida, where he spent the later years of his retirement. He was born in 1922 in Mansfield, Ohio, to a horse and buggy doctor and his wife. Fred achieved Phi Beta Kappa and medical society honors in both undergraduate and medical schools. He served in the U.S. Army, then moved to Sandusky, opening the first Pediatric practice in Erie County with his childhood friend Bill Seiler. After retirement Fred's wife, Mary Ann died in 1992. He met and married Jeanne and moved to Florida. Fred began his commitment to volunteerism in his childhood, achieving Eagle Scout. As an adult he volunteered in Ohio and Florida with both adults and children in literacy, libraries, music/arts, environmental issues in local and state parks, as a Guardian ad Litem, foster kids, and Take Stock in Children, as well as a medical volunteer with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, polio vaccine campaign, and hospital boards. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 30th, at 2pm at St Mathews Episcopal Church on Hwy 90 in Chipley Florida, where he lived the last 20 years with Jeanne. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to your favorite charity. Dr. Lavender was Elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Hochzeitstag gefeiert - Ein kurzer Abriss seines Lebens. Dr. Gardner Ludwig verstarb heute Morgen um halb drei in seinem Haus in der Congress Street. Am 28. Januar feierten Dr. Ludwig und Frau Ludwig ihre Goldene Hochzeit, und am 9. Februar verstarb Frau Ludwig an einer Lungenentzündung, die vermutlich durch eine Erkältung verursacht wurde, die sie sich bei der Feier zugezogen hatte. Dr. Ludwig war zur Zeit der Goldenen Hochzeit ziemlich geschwächt, und der Tod seiner Frau schwächte ihn noch mehr. Er erkrankte an einer Lungenentzündung und konnte sich in seinem hohen Alter auch nicht mehr erholen. Er trauerte zutiefst über den Verlust seiner Frau, die sechzig Jahre lang seine ständige Begleiterin gewesen war, und wollte gehen. Der Tod des betagten Paares so kurz nach der Feier einer 80-jährigen Ehe hat etwas sehr Rührendes. Der Tod trennte sie nur für ein paar Tage. Es ist seltsam, dass Dr. und Mrs. Ludwig und Mr. Oren Ring, ein Nachbar und lebenslanger Freund, innerhalb weniger Tage starben. Dr. Ludwig hatte deutsche Vorfahren und war der Enkel von Captain Jacob Ludwig, einem der deutschen Auswanderer, die sich 1748 in Broad Bay, Waldoboro, niederließen. Jacob Ludwig war ein robuster Mann und Sergeant im Franzosen- und Indianerkrieg und Captain in der Revolutionsarmee. Nach dem Krieg war er der erste Abgeordnete von Waldoboro am Gericht von Massachusetts. Sein Sohn, Col. Jacob Ludwig, Dr. Ludwigs Vater, war viele Jahre lang Abgeordneter von Waldoboro, sowohl im Parlament von Massachusetts als auch nachdem Maine ein Staat wurde. Er war 25 Jahre lang Stadtrat von Waldoboro und über 30 Jahre lang Hilfssheriff im Lincoln County. Dr. Ludwig wurde im Juni 1812 in Waldoboro geboren und ist heute 84 Jahre alt. Er besuchte die städtischen Schulen, studierte Medizin und schloss 1833 die Bowdoin Medical School ab. Seine fünf Brüder waren alle Ärzte. Dr. Ludwig ging zunächst nach Rockland, wo er fast zwanzig Jahre lang praktizierte. Vor etwa 45 Jahren kam er in diese Stadt, wo er seither lebt, geehrt und respektiert von allen, die ihn kennen, und immer einen hohen Rang in der medizinischen Berufsgruppe einnimmt. Dr. Ludwigs langes Leben war außergewöhnlich ruhig. Er hat sehr wenige öffentliche Ämter bekleidet, wenn überhaupt, und ist in der Öffentlichkeit nie besonders aufgefallen. In Kriegszeiten war Dr. Ludwig als Rekrutenarzt tätig, und so mancher Soldat verdankt seinen militärischen Werdegang der Empfehlung des Arztes für den Dienst. Vor vielen Jahren wurde Dr. Ludwig beim Überqueren der Gleise der Grand Truck Railway von einem Zug erfasst und erlitt dabei eine so schwere Verletzung an einem seiner Beine, dass eine Amputation notwendig wurde. Am 28. Januar 1836 heiratete Dr. Gardner Ludwig aus Rockland im Haus der Eltern der Braut in Searport Miss Elizabeth Othrop, die Enkelin von Thomas Weghty. | 2203 | Dr. Hugh Ludwig Simmons (Nahum, Nathaniel, Col. James, Joseph, Deac. Nathaniel. Joseph, John, Moses) the son of Nahum Ludwig and Annie Maria (Brown) Simmons, was born at Morrill, Me., October 31, 1893. He was educated in the common schools of Morrill, Me., and attended in 1908-9, under the principalship of his brother Frederick, the George Francis Hatch High School, Pembroke, Mass. He then entered in 1909 Hig¬ gins Classical Institute, Charleston, Me., from which he was graduated in 1912. While at Higgins Classical Institute he was active in athletics, winning his letters in three sports: baseball, football and basketball. He also won the Institute’s prize in the Speaking Contest. He entered Tufts College Medical School in 1912, and was graduated with the M.D. degree in 1916. lie completed the medical and surgical courses at the Worcester City Hospital, Worcester, where he in¬ terned 1916-17, and 1918-19. He was house officer for several years. He was obstetrician at Worcester City Hospital for over thirty years, and President of the Medical Staff 1949-1951. He was consultant in obstet¬ rics at Fairlawn Hospital. He was appointed to the obstetrical service at Wor¬ cester City Hospital in 1919 and became the senior of¬ ficer in 1946. He was also Instructor of Obstetrics at Tufts College Medical School until his death in 1951. Dr. Simmons served as First Lieutenant, Medical Corps, U. S. Army during World War I, and was sta¬ tioned at Camp Greenleaf, Chickamauga Park, Ga. He was a Captain in the U. S. Army Reserve Corps from 1923 to 1933. Dr. Simmons was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Association, the American Medical Associ¬ ation, the New England Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, and of the Association of- Military Surgeons of the United States. On October 29, 1925, Dr. Simmons married Alice Emily Maloney, R.N., and they had three sons: Hugh L. Simmons, Jr., Boston University B.S. 1951; Robert Allan Simmons, Tufts A.B. 1951; and Bruce Donald Simmons, now 1952 in high school. Dr. Simmons had elaborate colonial and Mayflower ancestry. Twenty men and women who came in the Mayflower in 1620 are his progenitors. Among these are Dr. Samuel Fuller, the first physician in Plymouth and in New England, Capt. Miles Standish, Stephen Hopkins and Richard Warren. He is also descended from the Norton and Whipple families of Ipswich, Mass., William Moody of Newbury, Mass., from the Southworths, and three lines of Winslows of Ply¬ mouth, Mass. Dr. Simmons’ office was at 131 Pleasant St., for over thirty-two years. His home was at 61 Beechmont St., Worcester, Mass. Dr. Hugh L. He is happily married to his wife, Anna, and he is a very proud father to his three sons Michael, Johnathan, and Christopher. Dr. Whitted was an associate dentist in Naperville, Illinois for three years before opening his own practice in South Elgin, Illinois in May of 2006. Dr. Whitted and his family have fallen in love with the Fox Valley area and are proud to call it home. Living within minutes of the office offers a convenience and flexibility to both himself and his patients. Dr. Whitted and his family are involved in the local community and he loves running into patients around town; whether it be at community event, Saint Patrick’s school or church activity, a high school sporting event, or even while out to dinner at a local restaurant. | 2206 | DR. R. F. LUDWIG, DENTIST, TAKEN BY DEATH AT 81 Dr. Roscoe F. Ludwig, one of Chicago's leading dentists, died yesterday at his home in La Grange after a brief illness. He was 81 years old. Dr. Ludwig was known as La Grange's oldest commuter. For fifty years he had made the trip from there to his Chicago offices. He came to Chicago in 1863 from Maine and was graduated from Rush Medical college, from Northwestern and the Cincinnati Dental college. He was one of the founders of the Chicago Dental college and lectured there for many years. He was a veteran of the civil war. Dr. Ludwig is survived by a widow, Emma, and three children, Mrs. Alex C. Dallach, Mrs. H. A. Staley, and Leon Ludwig. Funeral service will be held tomorrow in Emmanuel church, La Grange. | 2233 | Earl G. Creamer 30. November 1931 – 22. März 2023 Earl G. Creamer, 91, aus Washington, verstarb am 22. März 2023 im Sussman House in Rockport im Beisein seiner Familie. Earl wurde am 30. November 1931 als Sohn von Elmer W. Creamer und Florence (Davis) Creamer in Washington geboren. Er wuchs in der Gegend um Washington auf und besuchte dort die Schulen. In jungen Jahren arbeitete Earl für die Central Maine Power Company und war anschließend 45 Jahre lang als Bauarbeiter tätig. Außerdem züchtete er 70 Jahre lang Weihnachtsbäume und fuhr Schneepflug für die Stadt Washington. Earl kaufte Land am Damariscotta Lake, wo er an verschiedenen Projekten arbeitete. Er genoss Schneemobilfahren, Angeln, Eisfischen, Jagen und die Zeit, die er am Moosehead Lake verbrachte. Earl hatte einen ausgeprägten Sinn für Humor und für jeden einen Spitznamen. Er war geistreich, ein begnadeter Geschichtenerzähler und ein Schelm. Earl wurde von seinem Sohn Erlon Creamer, seinem Bruder Ronald Creamer, seiner Frau Patricia Creamer und seinen vier Schwestern Mildred Griffin, Phyllis Daniels, Hazel Rood und Blanche Wilson überlebt. Er hinterlässt seine Tochter Earline Marquis aus Brunswick, seinen Enkel Adam McNaughton und dessen Frau Judy aus Jefferson, seine Enkelin Angela Gallagher aus Bow, New Hampshire, seinen Enkel Eric Creamer aus Bath, seine Enkelin Eron Sprague aus New Gloucester sowie acht Urenkel: Liam, Victoria, Jocelyn, Jake, Earl, Elicia, Mitch und A.J. | 2234 | Earle Winfield Clifford, 83, verstarb am 24. Oktober 2022 im Sussman House in Rockport, Maine. Earle wurde am 2. Dezember 1938 geboren. Er wuchs in Boothbay Harbor auf und besuchte die örtlichen Schulen. Im Alter von 10 Jahren begann er mit der Meeresernte, indem er Muscheln, Hummer und Immergrün fischte. Er restaurierte und lackierte auch Autos, mit Hilfe seines Sohnes Steven bei einigen seiner Projekte. Er pflanzte und pflegte zwei Weihnachtsbaumfarmen. Er war immer ein hart arbeitender Mann (musste es sein, um Claire über die Jahre in ihren Sportwagen zu halten!). Earle und seine Familie wurden 1980 in der Zeitschrift "Down East" unter dem Titel "Following the tides" vorgestellt. Er war ein sehr aktiver Naturbursche und Sportler. Er liebte die Jagd und das Angeln von Coons, Hirschen, Elchen, Bären und Truthähnen. (Er hatte sogar einmal eine Begegnung mit einem Bären.) Er und sein Sohn Jeff errichteten ihr Jagdcamp in Upper Enchanted Township, jagten dort und hielten Ausschau nach Elchschuppern. Sie sind beide sehr künstlerisch und würden wunderschöne Tierszenen darauf malen. Im Laufe der Jahre erhielt er über 50 Auszeichnungen für Trophäenbären, Hirsche, Elche und Truthähne vom Maine Antler & Skull Trophy Club, wie in ihren Jahresbüchern abgebildet und angegeben. Seine "Männerhöhle" im Tageslichtkeller hat viele in Erstaunen versetzt, voll mit Tierpräparaten, Bildern, Elchhornartistik, von ihm gemalten Bildern, Trophäen und Urkunden. Earle wurde von seinem Vater Winfield und seiner Mutter Nora Clifford, seiner Schwester Rebecca Davis und seinem Ehemann Freddy Davis vorverstorben. Er hinterlässt seine Frau Claire Winchenbach Clifford aus Waldoboro, die am 28. He was a retired retail grain dealer and lived at Waldoboro for most of his life. Mr. Winchenbach is survived by his wife, Sybil Creamer Winchenbach of Waldoboro, three daughters, Mrs. Felix (Pauline) Olezzynsky of North Riverside, Ill., Mrs. Louis (Mona) Lott of Rounoke, Va., and Mrs. Norman (Lois) Small of Gorham, N.H., 17 grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. | 2244 | Edward Andrews Obituary Edward C. Andrews Jr., MD, 85 YARMOUTH -- Dr. Edward C. Andrews Jr., of Yarmouth, former President of the Maine Medical Center and the University of Vermont, died Feb. 19, 2010. Ed was born in Rockland in January 1925 and grew up in Plainfield, Vt. He was a veteran of the Navy V-12 program, graduating from Middlebury College in 1946 and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1951, specializing in pathology. He also received honorary doctoral degrees from Middlebury College, Bowdoin College, the University of Vermont and the University of Dakar in Senegal. He is survived by his wife, Jean Lyndes Andrews; and their five children, Leslie Freeman and her husband Jim of Arundel, U.K. and Naples, Fla., Dawn Andrews of Morrisville, Vt., Dale Wadhams and her husband John of Burlington, Vt., Ted Andrews and his wife Deb of Yarmouth, and Scott Andrews of Burlington, Vt. He also leaves 12 grandchildren, Claire Freeman Becerra, Hope Freeman LeBlanc, Jonah and Levi Bourne, Bates and Leslie Wadhams, Larsen and Ethan Andrews, Nathan, Ian, Adam and Laura Andrews; three great- grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Mary Andrews of Cushing; and many nieces and nephews. In 1951, Ed began his career at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as Chief Resident and instructor in pathology. In 1958 he moved with his family to Jericho, Vt., and continued his career at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, where he served as professor of Pathology, Associate Dean from 1964 to 1966, and Dean from 1966 to 1970. He became President of the University of Vermont in 1970. In 1975, he moved to Maine to become President of the Maine Medical Center in Portland and served in that role until his retirement in 1988. During his professional career and retirement, Ed served on many boards and commissions focusing on higher education, medical education, hospitals and health care planning, including the Charles A. Dana Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Green Mountain College, Maine Hospital Association, Edward C. Andrews Jr., MD Lindquist Funeral Home Funeral Home & Cremation Service 846-4011 American Hospital Association, the Vermont Higher Education Council, and St. Joseph's College of Maine. Ed was very proud to serve as a consultant to the U.S. State Department, the Agency for International Development and the Pakistan Government on medical education and healthcare development. He also served on the Council of Deans for the American Medical Association, as well as the boards of local banks including Maine Savings Bank and the Chittenden Trust Company. Although Ed achieved many things that led to state and national recognition, he always maintained the greatest respect and awe for the fishermen, farmers, carpenters and plumbers who were the heroes of his Plainfield, Vt. and Cushing childhood. Ed was a man of many passions, including woodworking, stonewall building, hunting, horses, fishing, gardening, and sailing, including a transatlantic race from Bermuda to Spain. His humor was always earthy and he was proud of the manure on his boots. His happiest times were with his family and friends at his camps on Gay's Island in Maine and on Hardwood Mountain in Vermont. Ed always said he never could have accomplished so much without the love and support of his wife Jean throughout their 62 years of marriage. Ed was born on June 10, 1934 in Gardiner, Maine to parents Edward I. Ludwig and Florence Marshall Ludwig. Ed attended and graduated from Gardiner, Maine public schools and received his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maine. Ed’s working career was as a Chemical Engineer for Monsanto Chemical, an owner/operator of the Rabbit Hill Inn in Lower Waterford, VT, as well as a business broker for Yankee Business Brokers of Maine. Never one to sit idle Ed was a world traveler, loved sailing & fishing, was an accomplished fine furniture craftsman and above all loved spending time with his loving wife Nancy and family. Ed so enjoyed growing up in the Gardiner area , Ed had a lifelong love for the Belgrade Lakes, ultimately refurbishing their serene lakefront home in Rome, Maine with his wife Nancy. Ed was community minded having served on the School Boards of West Springfield, MA and the SAD # 50 School Board when he moved to Mid-Coast Maine. Ed was also a member of the Thomaston Green Redevelopment Committee ( former Maine State Prison site) Ed was also a member of the order of the ELKS . Ed’s family fondly recalls him as being a kind loving husband, and respected, caring and loving father. He will be missed by all who knew him. Ed was predeceased by his parents and two step children, Gregory Schneller and Nina Maxwell. Ed is survived by his loving wife Nancy S. Ludwig of Thomaston, Maine, his brother and sister in law Richard and Marge Ludwig of Williamsburg, VA, his sister and brother in law Helen and Ron Jiracek of St. Michael, MN , his half sister Mary DeBoer of Lacey, WA. He is also survived by his nieces Nancy English of Portland, ME, Marjory Ludwig of State College, PA, Helen Ludwig of Charlottsville, VA, and Beth Ludwig of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by a nephew John D. Ginsberg of Plymouth, MA. Ed also leaves his beloved 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren ( with one on the way) and many close friends. | 2247 | Edward R. Mank, Sr., 91, of Wiscasset, died at his son Richard's residence, surrounded by his family. Born in Bath, he was a son of Elmer and Hazel (Stevens) Mank, Sr., and attended Woolwich, and Bath schools. He was employed at Bath Iron Works as a carpenter. On December 5, 1938 he married Frances A. Lewis. Mr. Mank entered the United State Navy, and served during World War II. He returned to Bath Iron Work as a carpenter, and retired, after 44 years, on May 1, 1980. He was a member of the Masons; enjoyed gardening, and traveling, especially, the many winters he spent with this wife Frances in Arizona. Mr. Mank was predeceased by his wife, Frances A. Mank on May 28, 2003. Survivors include two sons, Edward R. Mank, Jr., and his wife, Joan, of Damariscotta, Richard L. Mank, and his wife, Carolyn, of Wiscasset; one daughter, Brenda J. House, of Wiscasset; three brothers, Elmer Mank, Jr., of Woolwich, Vernon Mank, of New Mexico, and Warren Mank, of Florida; two sisters, Phyllis Dionne, of Connecticut, and Glennis Maxson, of Lisbon Falls; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, and nephews. He was born Nov. 28, 1949 in Damariscotta, the son of William Edward Matson and Margaret Mank Matson. He attended Waldoboro High School and graduated in the class of 1967. He attended Unity College and Ricker College. In the 1970s Ed worked at Sulo’s Texaco in Waldoboro and then took it over and ran it as Waldoboro Texaco. He later began his own construction company, Ed Matson Excavation, which he operated for many years. He was a member of King Solomon’s Lodge No. 61 A.F. & A.M. in Waldoboro. He enjoyed people and the many friendships he had made over his life. He was predeceased by his father, William Edward Matson. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Mank Matson of Union; sons, Edward “Eddie” Matson Jr. and wife Christina of Waldoboro, Todd W.
