Simmons, was born at Morrill, Me., October 31, 1893.
He was educated in the common schools of Morrill,
Me., and attended in 1908-9, under the principalship of
his brother Frederick, the George Francis Hatch High
School, Pembroke, Mass. He then entered in 1909 Hig¬
gins Classical Institute, Charleston, Me., from which
he was graduated in 1912.
While at Higgins Classical Institute he was active in
athletics, winning his letters in three sports: baseball,
football and basketball. He also won the Institute’s
prize in the Speaking Contest.
He entered Tufts College Medical School in 1912,
and was graduated with the M.D. degree in 1916. lie
completed the medical and surgical courses at the
Worcester City Hospital, Worcester, where he in¬
terned 1916-17, and 1918-19. He was house officer for
several years. He was obstetrician at Worcester City
Hospital for over thirty years, and President of the
Medical Staff 1949-1951. He was consultant in obstet¬
rics at Fairlawn Hospital.
He was appointed to the obstetrical service at Wor¬
cester City Hospital in 1919 and became the senior of¬
ficer in 1946. He was also Instructor of Obstetrics at
Tufts College Medical School until his death in 1951.
Dr. Simmons served as First Lieutenant, Medical
Corps, U. S. Army during World War I, and was sta¬
tioned at Camp Greenleaf, Chickamauga Park, Ga. He
was a Captain in the U. S. Army Reserve Corps from
1923 to 1933.
Dr. Simmons was a member of the Massachusetts
Medical Association, the American Medical Associ¬
ation, the New England Obstetrical and Gynecological
Society, and of the Association of- Military Surgeons of the United States.
On October 29, 1925, Dr. Simmons married Alice
Emily Maloney, R.N., and they had three sons: Hugh
L. Simmons, Jr., Boston University B.S. 1951; Robert
Allan Simmons, Tufts A.B. 1951; and Bruce Donald
Simmons, now 1952 in high school.
Dr. Simmons had elaborate colonial and Mayflower
ancestry. Twenty men and women who came in the
Mayflower in 1620 are his progenitors. Among these
are Dr. Samuel Fuller, the first physician in Plymouth
and in New England, Capt. Miles Standish, Stephen
Hopkins and Richard Warren. He is also descended
from the Norton and Whipple families of Ipswich,
Mass., William Moody of Newbury, Mass., from the
Southworths, and three lines of Winslows of Ply¬
mouth, Mass.
Dr. Simmons’ office was at 131 Pleasant St., for over
thirty-two years. His home was at 61 Beechmont St.,
Worcester, Mass.
Dr. Hugh L. Simmons died at Worcester City Hos¬
pital early Tuesday morning, November 20, 1951. Fu¬
neral services were held at the First Baptist Church,
Friday November 23, 1951, Rev. Gordon M. Torgersen
officiating. He now rests in a beautiful lot in Hope
Cemetery, Worcester, Mass.
