  	City man’s body found in Portland Charles Mason was known to police in Lewiston, where he often would panhandle change. By Mark LaFlamme Staff Writer PORTLAND – A man whose body was found floating in Portland Harbor Saturday morning was identified Monday as a Lewiston resident well known to police in this area. Investigators believe 50-year-old Charles Mason may have drowned after a night of drinking with a group of other people near the water off Fore Street. Mason’s body was found floating near a rocky section of the shore at about 9:45 a.m. Saturday in front of the Portland Yacht Club. Police and fire crews used a boat to retrieve the body. The identity of the dead man was not known until Monday. Police in Portland said Mason was the third homeless man to die in that city in recent weeks. A 51-year-old was found dead in a wooded area in mid-March and a 52-year-old was found dead days later. Mason had extensive criminal histories and both Lewiston and Portland, according to court records. In Lewiston, he had been arrested dozens of times on charges of disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, obstructing public ways, theft and drinking in public. Mostly, police said, Mason would hang around the front of stores trying to panhandle change from customers going in and out of the stores. In court records, Mason listed addresses on Horton, Howe and Pine streets although he was mostly frequently described as a local transient. His mother lives in downtown Lewiston and a brother lives in Auburn. In Portland, police said Mason had a similar criminal history. In recent years, Portland police have dealt with Mason at least 100 times. On Monday, investigators in Portland contacted Lewiston police to alert them that the body had been identified as Mason. An autopsy was performed at the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office, although no findings were released. Police said Mason’s death is not considered suspicious though it remains under investigation. mlaflamme@sunjournal.com
