ZILLAH - Maybelle (May) Florence Elizabeth Prothero, 91, long time resident of Naches and Zillah died May 12th at her daughter's home in Zillah from complications following a recent fall.

Maybelle was born on August 20, 1916 in Beverly Massachusetts, the daughter of Franklin Murdock Hoak and Flora Annabelle Hoak. Maybelle was the youngest of five children. Her mother passed away when she was very young and she learned to be positive and self-sufficient. Maybelle developed many wonderful abilities to look at the brighter side of life and wear a smile. She always wanted to lighten the burdens of those around her. She was an example to all who knew her and she radiated the love of our Heavenly Father. She had many jobs that reflected her love to serve others, working at a school for the deaf and a tuberculosis hospital as a young woman. Maybelle joined the Coast Guard in World War II. In 1945, while being stationed in Hawaii, Maybelle met her husband, Harold Prothero of Goldendale, WA. They were married in 1946 and began their family in Goldendale, WA, later moving to Naches to raise their three daughters. To most people she was known as May. May's husband, Harold, died suddenly on December 21, 1970. May had been a stay-at-home mom, being totally devoted to her husband and three daughters. She was involved in many organizations, Blue Birds, Campfire Girls, 4-H, PTA, and always volunteering anywhere she was needed. After the death of her husband she worked for Art Craft Furniture Store, Yakima Implement, and later she was the secretary of the Naches Middle School, where she retired in 1981. She wanted to continue working so she worked full time for the next 25 years for Medstar Cabulance Service.

May grew up attending many different churches with her father, who taught her about the true happiness that comes from believing and serving God. May sought her Heavenly Father throughout her life and was blessed to have peace and joy through study and service in her church. May was an exemplar member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints. She had a sweet, deep testimony of the truthfulness that God has shown His love for His children by creating a plan to help us return to His presence. May's understanding that families can be together forever helped her and her loved ones pass this stage of life without fear, but with faith in our Savior. All who knew her will truly miss her.

May was the most loving, Christ like mother, grandmother and Aunt that a family could ever be blessed with. Her example of kindness, happiness, generosity, selflessness, patience and enduring the trials of life will never be forgotten. Her posterity will sing praises to her name forever. May's faith and testimony of truth will live in their hearts forever and carry them through the trials of life. Her legacy to her family is one of love and to live their lives to serve others in order to find happiness, as she did. Her family has been blessed to learn from all that she was and is.

May was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her brothers: Frank II, Roderick, and Paul Hoak, and her sister, Mary McLeod. May is survived by three daughters: Marylynne Bergener of Zillah, WA, Carole Huls of Naches, WA, and Cheryl McLane of Salt Lake City, UT, ten grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2008 at the Naches Ward of Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-day Saints. Burial at Terrace Heights Memorial Park will have preceded the memorial service. Keith and Keith Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
