- Elizabeth J. "Bettie" Dodson, loving daughter, sister, mother and friend, died peacefully at her home in Houston, Texas on August 26, 2000. Formerly of Naples, Florida and Barrington, IL. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, J. Robert and Ann Warshauer Dodson of Houston, TX, Steven R. and Karen Freatman Dodson of Steamboat Springs, CO; a daughter, Patricia Dodson of Winnetka, IL; four grandchildren, Scott and Christopher Dodson, Katherine and Jennifer Harwood; two stepgrandchildren, Collin and Colby Young; a brother and sister-in-law, William F. and Marguarite Ludwig; a niece and nephew, Brooke Crowden and Bill Ludwig. Bettie was born March 23, 1920 in Oak Park, IL to William F. Ludwig (founder of The Ludwig Drum Company, Chicago, IL) and Elsa M. Gunkler Ludwig. She attended Oak Park High School and graduated from Penn Hall Junior College in Pennsylvania. After working for her father at the Drum Company for a year, she enlisted in the Navy. She attended the USNR Midshipmen's School, University of Notre Dame, June 1943 to November 1945. She enrolled in the pilots training class and became the first woman allowed to attend the university. She served for two years as a W.A.V.E., Yoeman First Class. Married, she returned to Chicago to start a family and rejoin the family business. As a Director, she headed up the National Association of Rudimental Drummers (N.A.R.D.), of which she was a proud member. A memorial service will be held at the Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples, Florida on November 4, 2000 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or The Conservancy of Southwest Florida in Naples.
