Layton wurde im Januar 1937 als Sohn von Margaret und Philip Mank geboren. Er absolvierte 1955 die Coral Gables Senior High School. An der University of Florida erwarb er 1959 einen Bachelor of Science in Politikwissenschaft und 1962 seinen Juris Doctor an derselben Universität. Er war Mitglied der Studentenverbindung Sigma Phi Epsilon und blieb zeitlebens ein stolzer Anhänger der Florida Gators. Seine erste Ehe schloss er 1960 mit Nancy Lomax. Nach seinem Jurastudium diente er in der US-Armee auf Hawaii und erreichte den Rang eines Hauptmanns. Dort war er unter anderem für die Verpflichtung von Aushilfsspielern für das Baseballteam der Schofield Barracks zuständig. Nach seiner erfolgreichen Militärkarriere stieg er in der Anwaltskanzlei Blackwell & Walker in Miami schnell auf und spezialisierte sich auf Produkthaftung und Seerecht. Er war Funktionär im Verband der Versicherungs- und Unternehmensjuristen sowie in der Seerechtsvereinigung. Zudem war er Präsident der Historischen Gesellschaft Südfloridas und prägte deren erfolgreiche Entwicklung. Im Juli 1982 heiratete er Mary Stuart Patton. Das Paar unternahm gemeinsam viele Reisen und war begeisterter Sportfan. Ihre gemeinsame Familie umfasst vier Kinder und acht Enkelkinder. In jeder Familie eines seiner Kinder ist ein Enkelkind nach ihm benannt. Er hinterlässt seine Ehefrau Mary Stuart; seinen Sohn Stephen aus Atlanta (Ehefrau Danita, Kinder Sterling und Rowan); seinen Sohn Christopher aus Lakeland (Ehefrau Kathleen, Kinder Callen, Caroline und Campbell); seine Tochter Julie Courtright aus Cedarburg, Wisconsin (Kind Oliver Niehaus); und seine Tochter Bentley Balzebre aus Miami (Ehemann Thomas und Kinder Patton und Lenox). Die Beisetzung findet am Samstag, dem 4. Juni, um 10:00 Uhr auf dem Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville, Florida, statt. Anschließend findet um 11:00 Uhr ein Gedenkgottesdienst in der Holy Trinity Episcopal Church statt, danach gibt es einen Empfang. Die Familie bittet um Spenden an die Historical Association of Southern Florida oder das Historic Thomas Center of Gainesville.

Layton was born to Margaret and Philip Mank in January 1937. He graduated from Coral Gables Senior High School in 1955. At the University of Florida he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 1959, and went on to receive his Juris Doctor degree in 1962 from the same university. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and remained a proud citizen of the Gator Nation throughout his life. His first marriage was to Nancy Lomax in 1960. Following law school, he rose to the rank of captain while serving in the United States Army in Hawaii. There, among his many duties, he was also responsible for transferring in "ringers" for the Schofield Barracks baseball team. After his decorated military career, he rose through the ranks at the Miami based law firm: Blackwell & Walker where he specialized in product liability and admiralty law. He was an officer in both the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel and the Maritime Law Association. He also served as the president of the Historical Association of Southern Florida, where he oversaw a fruitful period of growth and development. In July 1982 he married Mary Stuart Patton. Throughout their time together, the loving couple were avid travelers and sports fans. Their combined family comprises four children and eight grandchildren. He has a grandchild named after him in each child's family. He is survived by his wife Mary Stuart; his son Stephen of Atlanta (wife, Danita and children, Sterling and Rowan); his son Christopher of Lakeland (wife, Kathleen and children, Callen, Caroline and Campbell); his daughter Julie Courtright of Cedarburg, WI (child, Oliver Niehaus); and his daughter Bentley Balzebre of Miami (husband Thomas and children, Patton and Lenox). A graveside service will take place Saturday, June 4th at 10 am at Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville, FL. A memorial service will follow at 11 am at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, with a reception afterwards. The family suggests donations to the Historical Association of Southern Florida or The Historic Thomas Center of Gainesville.
