Obituary for Elizabeth F. Betty Kaler-1

Obituary for Elizabeth F. "Betty" Kaler Owls Head - Elizabeth "Betty" F. Kaler, 77, died Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following an extended illness. Born at Glen Cove, New York, July 18, 1928, she was the daughter of George & Elizabeth Fife Suttie. Educated in local schools she was a 1947 graduate of Glen Cove High School. In early years she played semi-pro softball with the Glen Cove Girls Softball Team. They played under the lights in New York City during the late 1940's. Betty worked for the phone company in New York before entering the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. While serving on the Air Force base in Rome, New York she met Richard F. Kaler. On December 20, 1952 they were married. After the Korean Conflict they lived a brief while in New York, before settling in Rockland at Kalers Corner. Upon her return to Rockland, Mrs. Kaler was employed with New England Telephone Company and later with the S&H Green Stamp Store. Having vacationed frequently in Florida, Mr. and Mrs. Kaler moved there full time in 1985. They resided in Claremont until 2000. The couple spent summers at Mic-Mac Camp Ground in Union. During the mid 1970's Mrs. Kaler worked during the winter months at the Rockland Recreation Center, where she was involved as a coach with the Pee-Wee programs. For several years she worked at the Rockland Golf Course in the Pro Shop and Concessions. Later she was employed with the Knox County Jail, resigning from there in 1987. An ardent sports fan, Mrs. Kaler followed her family's involvement in all their sports activities. Her family remembers her as passionately devoted to them. She will be remembered as "Mimi" to many. Always active Mrs. Kaler was a Past President of the Rockland Emblem Club, and also loved to play cards. More than once Mrs. Kaler quietly helped others by opening her home to many of the children in her neighborhood. She also shared a special friendship with Sandy Lowe, whom she considered a daughter. Mrs. Kaler was predeceased by her husband in 2000 and her cousins wife Nancy Spy. She is survived by her son, Richard G. Kaler of Washington; two daughters Karen Kaler of Cushing, Patti Elwell and her husband Kenneth of Owls Head; one brother John "Ian" Suttie and his wife Beverly and their daughter Lynn all of Locust Valley, New York; six grandchildren, Jason Kaler, Jonathan Kaler, Graham Raymond, Rebekah Raymond, Joshua Elwell, Jessica Elwell; two cousins, Kenneth Spy, Catherine Bullock and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Betty's life will be held, at 4:00 pm, Friday, November 25, 2005 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, Maine. The Reverend Robin Honaker will officiate. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to National Kidney Foundation of Maine, P.O. Box 1134, Portland, Maine 04104.
