HALLOWELL -- Katherine Phylis Holmes Snell, 82, 5 Grove St., died Feb., 3, 1993 at Kennebec Valley Medical Center, Augusta Division.
She was born in Lubec, Dec. 2, 1910, the daughter of Clayton S. and Elsie A. (Greenlaw) Holmes.
She graduated from Calais Academy in 1928 and attended Oak Grove Seminary in Vassalboro. In 1933, she graduated from Colby College and later took library science courses there. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.
A homemaker, Mrs. Snell worked in department stores in Waterville and Portland and at Gardiner Public Library for one year. She was head librarian at Hubbard Free Library in Hallowell from 1963-87.
On May 20, 1935, she married Burrill Dexter Snell in Gardiner. He died Sept. 23, 1983.
Mrs Snell moved to Calais in 1924 and lived in Fairfield from 1934-35. She then traveled over most of the United States and moved to Portand, where she lived until 1943. She then moved to Hallowell.
Mrs. Snell also co-author with Vincent P. Ledew of "Historic Hallowell," prepared as part of the Hallowell bicentennial in 1962.
Hallowell's Citizen of the Year for 1991, Mrs Snell served on the School board for six years and on the committee to restore the Dr. John Hubbard Jr. office in Hallowell.
She was a member of the Augusta Country Club, the Questers, Lubec Historical Society, New Brunswick Genealogical Society, St. Andrew's Society of Maine, and the Row House Inc.
She won prizes for her miniature room displays.
She is survived by two sons, Jere R. Snell of Raleigh, N.C., and Stephen H. Snell of Washington D.C.; a daughter, Anna M. Snell of Vassalboro; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several cousins.
Friends may call today 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 68 Second Street.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturay at the Old South Congregational Church, Hallowell. Spring burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Fairfield.
