- NEWCASTLE -- Florence Evelyn (Plummer) Waltz, 86 of Newcastle, left this life on February 13, 2016 in her own home and in the company of her family.
The youngest child of Clyde and Mary Plummer, she was born and grew up in Damariscotta Mills. As a young girl she worked at her great uncle's (Ernest McGray's) General Store. She graduated from Lincoln Academy and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Newcastle.
In 1949 Florence married Carroll Sewell Waltz, the oldest son of a large family also living in "the Mills". For several years they spent their summers as part of a crew building roads in northern Maine. While they were there the two made many lifelong friends. They had two children and bought an old farm on the Pond Road in Newcastle, complete with a big read barn, fields and woods running down to Damariscotta Lake. Later they built their own house on the property with help from Florence's brother, Samuel Plummer. Next came a road and a place to stay at the lake. Florence and Carroll spent many happy summers there with lots and lots of friends and family.
Florence was a wonderful mother and homemaker. She cooked wonderful Sunday dinners for her whole family and always enjoyed her role as grandmother and great-grandmother. With her husband, Florence enjoyed traveling in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. When Carroll developed Alzheimer's disease she was his primary caregiver for many long and loving years. With help from her family, she enabled Carroll to stay in the home he loved through the end of his days. Happily, with the support of her family and the exceptional care of Dr. Alan Teele, Florence was also able to stay at home as she wished. Another dream she was able to fulfill in her last years was visiting Alaska with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carroll, and her siblings; Samuel Plummer, Frances Maragioglio and Dorothy Gilbert.
She leaves her two children Gerard Waltz and his wife Suzanne and Barbara Neeson and her husband John David. Grandchildren: Christina Rice with husband Randy, Angelina Waltz, John Waltz with wife Charity, Rhea Butler with husband Oliver, Jesse Daiute and Johanna Neeson. Great grandchildren: Jennifer Genthener, Caleb Rice, Kyra, Shyla and Harley Waltz and Bert Butler.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a time of visitation 5-7 PM on Friday evening, February 19th at Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 o'clock AM on Saturday morning, February 20, 2016 at Saint Patrick Church, Academy Hill Road, Newcastle. Spring interment will be in the Highland Cemetery, Nobleboro.
Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Florence's memory to St. Patrick Church, P.O. Box #598, Newcastle, Maine 04553. Condolences, and messages for the family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com.
