WIFE OF WRIGHT E CHARLES Mabel Hope (Lewis) Charles, 79, a longtime resident of Mayflower Lane, South China village, died Wednesday at Mid Maine Center in Waterville after a brief illness. She was born in Whitefield, a daughter of Leslie Wadsworth and Blanche Robinson Lewis, and graduated from Erskine Academy in South China and Farmington Normal School. Over the years, Mrs. Charles worked at Bath Iron Works during World War II and then taught school. Later she owned an antiques shop, Auld Lang Syne, but she was best known as the owner of Grey Matter Service, an antiquarian bookstore in South China. She was a member of the China Historical Society, China Area Chamber of Commerce, National Bookmen's Association and was a past member of Zonta International. She also served on various school board committees and took a tremendous interest in the town's civic affairs. Her husband, Wright E. Charles, died in 1973. Surviving are three sons, Preston Purington of West Bowdoin, Howard Charles of Skowhegan and Harold Charles of China; three daughters, Priscilla Daigle of Fort Kent, Nancy Bennett of Denver, Colo., and Mary Morgan of Wells; five sisters, Marion Boynton, Geneva Ellis, both of Augusta, Mary Bailey of Wilamina, Ore., Helen Lewis of McMinville, Ore., and Caroline Griswold of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs arbeitete Frau Charles in den Eisenwerken von Bath und unterrichtete anschließend an einer Schule. Später besaß sie ein Antiquitätengeschäft, Auld Lang Syne, wurde aber vor allem als Inhaberin von Grey Matter Service, einem Antiquariat in Südchina, bekannt. Sie war Mitglied der China Historical Society, der Handelskammer China, der National Bookmen's Association und ehemaliges Mitglied von Zonta International. Sie engagierte sich außerdem in verschiedenen Schulausschüssen und engagierte sich sehr für die städtischen Angelegenheiten der Stadt. Ihr Ehemann, Wright E. Charles, starb 1973.
