- MONROE - Herman Robert Schmerse, 87, died at 7:20 a.m. today (December 27th) in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harold (Frances) Baer, Route 3, from old-age complications. He had made his home here with the daughter in Clarno Township the past three years.
He was born in Pommern, Germany, October 18, 1878, the son of Herman and Louise Grossman Schmerse. He was 2 1/2 years old when the family came to America, settling in Buckskin Hollow of Monroe Township. He attended area schools. He had farmed all of his active years, moving to Monroe in 1948 and residing at 2319 - 13th Street. Mr. Schmerse and Palma Schmid were married December 24, 1902 in Monroe. Mrs. Schmerse died December 13, 1959. Mr. Schmerse was a life member of the Immanuel EUB Church. He had served on the Iliff School Board for several years while on the farm.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Bear and Mrs. Frieda Forster, Spencer, Wisconsin; two sons, Harris, Spencer, and Lee G., Findlay, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Ed (Ida) ZumBrunnen, Madison and Mrs. Henry (Hulda) Haberman, Monroe; two brothers, Will Schmerse, Monroe, and Emil, Juda; nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mrs. Royal (Florence) Otterstein, Rock City, Illinois, October 20, 1955; a sister, Mrs. George (Augusta) Buehl, Monroe, and two brothers, George, Monroe, and Gustav, Orangeville.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Newcomer Funeral Home of Monroe, Reverend Melvin J. Roehrdanz of the Immanuel Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after tomorrow.
