WALDOBORO - Dr. Jasper Jacob Stahl, 83, of Waldoboro, author, educator and philanthropist, died May 10 at a Damariscotta hospita. He was born at Waldoboro on Nov. 14, 1886, the son fo Capt. Albion F. and Lucy (Heyer Keene) Stahl. He was graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, in 1909, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Of seafaring ancestry, he sailded around Cape Horn as a child to Valpariso, Chile aboard his father's ship. As a Henry W. Wadsworth scholar, he studied in Munich and Berlin, Germany, and attended Harvard. He taught at Reed College in Portland, Ore. prior to serving in teh U.S. Navy during World War I. He was director of studies at Hill School, Pottstown, Pa. for 38 years. During his retirement here, he researched and wrote a two-volume history on Broad Cove. He was a former chairman of the Wadoboro school board and a member of teh school building authority. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Waldoboro. He is survived by two nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Waldoboro, with the Rev. David K. Swensen officiating, assisted by Dr. Arthur A. Hauck of Camden, president Emeritus of the University of Maine; Dr. David D. Perkins, professor of English, Harvard University, and Dr. Roger Howell, president of Bowdoin College. Burial will be in the German Protestant-Lutheran Cemetery, Waldoboro.

Swensen officiating, assisted by Dr. Arthur A. Hauck of Camden, president emeritus of the University of Maine; Dr. David D. Perkins, professor of English Harvard University, and Dr. Roger Howell, president of Bowdoin College. Burial will be in the German Protestant-Lutheran Cemetery, Waldoboro.
