the son of Dr. Hugh Ludwig Simmons and Alice Emily
(Maloney) Simmons, was born at Worcester, Mass.,
February 26, 1930. He attended North High School, and
was graduated from Worcester Academy in 1947, and
from Tufts College, A.B. degree with a major in Econ¬
omics, 1951.
While at Tufts College he was a member of Delta
Tau Delta fraternity and represented his chapter of
the fraternity at its National Summer Convention in
1950. He was a member of his fraternity swimming
team, and of the Newman Club.
He has worked and traveled in the middle-west of
the United States.
Robert Allan Simmons comes from old New England
families of Maine and Massachusetts. He is descended
from Stephen Hopkins, Thomas Rogers, Richard War¬
ren, and from seventeen others of the Mayflower pas¬
sengers 1620. He is also descended from Rev. James
MacGregor, a Scot-Irish immigrant to New Hamp¬
shire in 1719, who was educated at the University of
Glasgow, Scotland, and was the first Presbyterian min¬
ister at Londonderry, N. H., and from the William
Moody family of Newbury, Mass., and from the Nor¬
ton, Whipple and Goodhue families of Ipswich, Mass.
Among his ancestors are Capt. Abiel Pierce of the
Revolutionary War and Col. James Simmons of the
War of 1812. He is also a distant cousin of Esther Min¬
erva Simmons (Mrs. Thomas A. Baxendale) who es¬
tablished the Baxendale Memorial Foundation at Har¬
vard University, and of John Simmons, the founder of
Simmons College, Boston. Mass., and of James Fowler
Simmons, U. S. Senator from Rhode Island, 1841-1847
and 1857-1862.
One of his cousins on his mother’s side is studying
(1952) Psychology and the Biologic Sciences at Clark
University in preparation for the study of medicine,
thus carrying on the family profession (on both sides)
of Doctor of Medicine.
Mr. Simmons is now (1952) taking his turn of serv¬
ice in the U. S. Army, stationed at Camp Dix, N. J.
His home address is 61 Beechmont St., Worcester,
Mass.
