Worcester Telegram & Gazette (MA) | 13 October 1999 NEEDHAM - James G. Leighton, 78, of Needham, died Oct. 4 in Deaconess Glover Hospital. He leaves his wife, Martha (Bailey) Leighton; two sons, including Richard T. Leighton of Upton; a brother; a grandchild. He graduated from the School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and attended the Navy Supply Corps School of Harvard University. He received his masters degree from Babson College in 1974. Mr. Leighton was a career Navy officer, serving in various capacities, including as assistant for contracts at the Bureau of Weapons in Waltham, an office that administered Navy and NASA contracts with Raytheon Co. for equipment that included the Sparrow III air-to-air missile, the Polaris missile guidance system, and the Apollo computer. He retired from the Navy in 1964 as Lieutenant Commander. After retiring from the military, he worked at GTE Sylvania in Needham and later in Westboro. The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Congregational Church of Needham, 1154 Great Plain Ave., Needham. There are no calling hours.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Congregational Church of Needham, 1154 Great Plain Ave., Needham, MA 02192 or to Needham Community Council, 51 Lincoln St., Needham, MA 02492.
