He was born in Waldoboro, a son of Roscoe and Cora Genthner Winchenbach and spent his early years there. At the age of 17, he went to work for Wilbur Morse, the originator of the Friendship Sloop, from whom he learned the trade. In 1919, he built his own boat shop at Friendship Harbor and until his retirement in 1961, Mr. Winchenbaugh built 159 pleasure and commercial boats. he designed all boats he built. In 1928, he moved to Friendship with his family. During World War II, he assisted in the war effort by working on military walercraft being built at Rockland. He was a mason, a member of the Knights of Pythias and for many years served on the local school board. His wife, Nellie Murphy Winchenbaugh died 20 years to the day before her husband. He is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Robert (Grace) Williams of Uxbridge, Mass., Mrs. Edward (Arlene) Schultz of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Mrs. Lester (Alma) Black of Friendship, Mrs. Vernon (Marie) Studley of Rockland, Mrs. Leonard (Joan) Harlow of Bangor and Mrs. James (Ava) Phillips of Damariscotta; a brother, Roscoe Winchenbach of Quincy, Mass., 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro, with the Rev. Norman Young officiating. Interment in Harbor Cemetery, Friendship.
