4652 Obituary
Charlotte (Kulevich) Burt, 77, of Marlborough died Wednesday July 7, 2021 after a long battle with End Stage Renal Failure. She was the wife of James E. Burt originally from Bibb County Alabama and current resident of Marlborough, Massachusetts. They met while both were serving in the United States Airforce and were married in 1966. Both Charlotte and James were avid travelers early in their marriage and throughout their lives together.

Charlotte was born on May 4, 1944 to Charles and Mary (Winchenbaugh) Kulevich in Baltimore, Maryland. Spending her early years growing up in Marlborough she enjoyed playing in various sports and absolutely adored the New England beaches. Her two younger sisters, Paula Kulevich and Anne Wynne both residents of Marlborough as well, formed an unbreakable bond for over 70 years.

After serving our country, Charlotte came back to Marlborough and was a lifelong resident. Framingham based Bicknell Pools was her first job and during the course of a 20 year career she would be introduced to many of her closest friends. The only thing that prevented her from continuing work would be the arrival of their son William Charles Burt in 1982. She became a stay at home mother for the first 7 years of William's life and she consistently said those were some of her happiest times.

Her second act in life started when she began working in the Marlborough School System. During her 20 years as an employee she made an uncountable amount of friendships with both peers and students alike. If you ask anybody whose paths crossed her own during these years you would be hard-pressed to find any negative feedback. She loved every student equally and would help anyone at the drop of the dime if they ever asked. She always had a smile on her face.

She is survived by her husband James of 55 years and her son William. Sister Paula Kulevich of Marlboro. Sister Anne Wynne and Brother-in-Law Matthew Wynne also of Marlboro. Sister-in- Law Robbie Nixon and her Husband Steve of West Blockton, Alabama and Sister-in-Law Katherine Caffee of Brent, Alabama. Not to mention the large amounts of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Services for Charlotte are private and are in the care of the Short & Rowe Funeral Home, 95 W. Main St, Marlborough, MA.

FRIENDSHIP — Carolyn Frances Kaler, 101, went to be with her Lord, August 6, 2023, at her home with her family at her side.

Born in Friendship, June 21, 1922, she was one of fourteen children of Robert S. Sr. and Levilda Carter Lash. She attended Friendship schools.

September 9, 1942, she married Benjamin Kaler and together they built their first home in Waldoboro. She loved spending time with her family and returned to Friendship almost daily. The young couple eventually sold their home and moved back to Friendship so Carolyn could be closer to her aging parents and siblings.

In her younger years, Carolyn worked at BIW and at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro. She was very creative and enjoyed refinishing furniture, weaving baskets and sewing. She also spent time working with her brothers, painting in the boat shop. An avid carpenter, she completed the finish work in parts of her home. What she considered her greatest accomplishment, was to be able along with her siblings, to care for her aging parents, until their passing.

Carolyn had a love of driving and riding in the car, traveling all across Maine, especially on back roads. She enjoyed her ‘mystery rides’ coffee, and fellowship with her family as she never passed up a ride.

Above all, Carolyn loved her Lord Jesus Christ. She made it her life’s work to make sure others knew Him as well. She was an active member of the Friendship Advent Christian Church, and for her 100th birthday, made it
her mission to gather pennies for the Penny Crusade.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Benjamin Kaler; brothers John, Austin, Douglas, Harold, Robert Jr., Paul and Winfield Lash; her sisters Mary Wotton, Eleanor Lash, Myra Maxy, and a great-grandson, Dominic Andrews.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Wotton and her husband Lance of Friendship; granddaughters and their husbands, Carolyn Andrews and Timothy George Andrews of Vinalhaven; Brenda Thompson and Steven Thompson, Jr., of Friendship; great-grandchildren and their spouses, Caleb and Arika Thompson of Steep Falls, Trevor and Cheyanne Thompson of Waldoboro, Steven III and Abigail Thompson of Warren, Lilly Andrews of Vinalhaven; great-great grandchildren, Sophera Thompson and Nolan Thompson; brothers Howard and Lois Lash, Philip and Janice Lash, and sister Esther Lane all of Friendship; as well as many nieces and nephews, with whom she cherished each and every relationship.

Her daughter and grand daughters, express their heartfelt thanks to her special niece, Brenda Winslow, who prayed her into God’s arms, and all the nurses, CNA’s and doctors at PenBay Medical Center Medsurg unit who
cared for her.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at 2 p.m., at Old Village Cemetery, Friendship. Rev. Alan Chamberlin will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Advent Christian Church for World Missions, P.O. Box 9, Friendship, ME 04547.

Gail C. Sheehan, 75, of Manchester, NH passed away on January 9, 2024 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH surrounded by her loving husband and daughter. Gail was born in Sanford, ME on June 24, 1948, a daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Shaw) Porter. She had been a resident of Manchester for 35 years.

A major source of pride for Gail was being an Army wife, and traveling and making friends everywhere she went. Whether it was learning to play softball in New York, or taking up golf in Kentucky, where she went on to become the president of the Ladies Golf Association, or just welcoming so many people in her family that needed it, Gail put her energy into all of it. Some fond memories will always include Gail’s love of dancing with her husband Tim, and even winning some dance contests doing the jitterbug, especially dressed in their best 60’s outfits! Some friends that she made throughout all of these years are still near and dear to her, showing that time and distance are no match for genuine friendship.

Upon moving back to New England, finally coming “home”, Gail began her career at Shaw’s, working her way through different roles and eventually becoming a Customer Service Manager. Not only did she provide great leadership to her team members, but she established many friendships that brought her so much happiness. When Gail retired from her career at Shaw’s, she found a new passion for her Papillon dogs, raising, breeding, and showing them. From Spot the Dog, to Cubby, to the queen of them all, Coco, and far too many to name, Gail had so much fun learning about this new world and found much success in and out of the ring with her beloved pups. Other important hobbies that also turned into amazing gifts for friends and family was Gail’s love of quilting, where she made the best of friends, and her seashell art, that now adorns many lucky homes.

Gail was always so full of life and shared that with everyone she knew and it can almost go without saying that her family was her biggest source of pride. Her husband Tim was always and continued to be her hero, right until her last moments, and her daughter Heidi was definitely her favorite child. Heidi and Gail would often share nights out to see live music, have shopping dates, or just talk on the phone. Her grandsons Alex and Bryan and the adventures they shared, whether camping, snowboarding, or simple video calls, provided her with all the smiles and joy. Adding her great grandson Brooks into the fold moved her joy to levels unimaginable. Hearing him say “Love you forever, Nana” was a memory that kept her smiling.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Timothy F. Sheehan of Manchester, one daughter, Heidi Leigh Sheehan of Londonderry, NH, two grandchildren, Alexander James Blouin and his wife, Jacquelyn, their son Brooks Oliver Blouin, and Bryan Cameron Blouin and his wife, Ainsley; one brother, Gary L. Porter of Center Barnstead, NH, one sister, Sharon E. Iverson of Somersworth, NH, as well as several nieces and nephews. Gail was predeceased by her sister, Carol A. Bonanno in 2014.

There are no calling hours. Following cremation, the family plans to have a Celebration of Life in the spring/summer 2024. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers or cards, Tim and Heidi would ask that you send donations in Gail’s name to the Community Hospice House, 210 Naticook Road, Merrimack, NH 03054.

Mr. Douglas Charles Wallace from Waldoboro, age 90 and a proud WWII veteran and patriot, passed away on Sep 22 after a short and unexpected illness. He was born in Friendship on July 17, 1924, the son of Addison Charles and Nellie Belle Wincapaw W allace. He was a dedicated and loving father and son.

Growing up during the depression he became a very enterprising young man. He grew and sold vegetables, dug clams, ran errands for neighbors, and worked hard in his Uncle Chade Simmons’ town black smith shop earning pennies for his efforts. Then h e would run to Al Pottle’s store to buy a loaf of bread for his mother for 2 cents. At the age of 15 he began working at the pants factory in Thomaston.

Douglas honorably served his country during WWII in the Pacific Theater. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the U. S. Army on March 4, 1943, completed his basic training in Miami Beach, FL and Vehicle Operator and Mechanic School at Chanute Field, IL . After training Pfc. Wallace was assigned to the Army Air Forces, 5th Air Force, 2078th Quartermaster Truck Company in Rapid City, South Dakota. As a truck driver, he hauled all elements of supplies, food, clothing, ammunition and bombs, personne l and the wounded throughout the advancement of U.S. forces in the Pacific during the war.

His company was transported through the Panama Canal on Christmas Day, 1943 enroute to Australia. Their advancement took them through New Guinea, to Biak Island and to several of the Philippine Islands before invading Japan. His Company was aboar d the Naval ship LST 750, which was one of 80 ships in a convoy enroute to Mindoro in the Philippine Islands. The convoy was attacked by Japanese kamikaze aircraft and his ship was torpedoed and sunk, causing everyone to abandon the ship. It was f rom injuries sustained in this attack that Pfc. Wallace earned the Purple Heart Medal. After regrouping, his Company moved forward to Ie Shima, an island in the Japanese Ryuku Islands and pressed on to invade the Japanese island of Kyushu. Pfc. Wa llace was in Japan at the time of the Japanese surrender in August, 1945. In addition to the Purple Heart Medal, Pfc. Wallace earned the Philippine Liberation Medal with bronze star, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater War Medal and th e Good Conduct Medal. During all of this time so far away, he always sent half of his monthly pay, the amount of $15, home to help ensure that his mother could make ends meet. He was discharged on January 17, 1946. His pride for his country had n o bounds.

After the war, Douglas returned to his home town of Friendship. He began working at Scott Carter’s boat building shop and quickly mastered the art and science of building wooden boats. This was a skill that brought him much pleasure in his life. H e also worked as a general carpenter learning plumbing and electrical skills to name a few; there was not much that he could not do all due to his natural curiosity and enthusiasm to learn. He often said, “I figured if they could do it…so could I. ” He also spent some time working at Bath Iron Works. He loved to dress up and go to the dances, which is where he met the mother of his children, Marjorie Wuori Wallace and they moved to Waldoboro. Later he started lobster fishing and made that h is long term career. He even built his own 29’ lobster boat, “MASSU”; it was his pride and joy. He also built many wooden lapstrake skiffs and row boats. With ambition to spare, at the same time he raised thousand of hens at his farm in Waldoboro . He retired from lobster fishing in 1986.

Throughout his life Douglas was an avid hunter. He enjoyed hunting rabbits with his rabbit dogs, and he was always excited for deer hunting season to begin. He loved to snowmobile and ice fish; he was an all-season advocate of nature and he share d that love with his children and grandchildren. His sense of humor was epic and he always held fascination for new things. He liked to travel with his truck and camper, especially to the fairs and “up north”, and visit with his family wherever th eir adventures took them. In his later years he continued to stay active as possible still mowing his lawn, riding his 4-wheeler and puttering in his shop. He so enjoyed visits from his family and friends. He was a proud member of the Waldoboro Am erican Legion, Post 149 and the Friendship Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3095.

Douglas is predeceased by his parents; his son Douglas A. Wallace; his grandson Elliot S. Montgomery; his brothers Robert W. Wallace and J. Harlan Wallace; and his sisters Ava V. Wallace, Annie B, Hutchins, and Evelyn M. Winchenbach.

4680 Obituary:
THOMASTON - Patricia Ann (Wallace) Beckett, 67, died Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a long illness. Born July 5, 1947 in Thomaston, Maine, she was the daughter of William A. and Celia Stone Wallace.

She attended local schools, and was a member of the first graduating class of the newly built Georges Valley High School in 1964. Upon graduation at the age of 16, she began work at the Knox Hospital in Rockland.

Patty met Robert Beckett, brother of schoolmate Eileen, and they were married on June 28, 1969, at the Methodist Church in Camden. Their daughter Melanie was born in 1971, and son Brian in 1978. At that time, she stayed home to raise her children. Over the years, Patty enjoyed teaching preschool at the Learning Center located at the Thomaston Federated Church, as well as taking care of neighborhood children in her home. Later in life, she earned a Certificate of Religious Studies.

One of Patty’s favorite memories included gathering with aunts, uncles, and cousins at her parent’s summer cottage on the St. George River in Cushing. She also enjoyed family lobster cookouts at the home of her Aunt Marion and Uncle Lewis Stone in Thomaston. Family holidays and birthday gatherings were always special times and created memories she cherished. Patty enjoyed baking and decorating for holidays.

Some of her favorite hobbies included keeping scrapbooks, watching the Cooking Channel, going to Marshall Point Light and Drift Inn Beach, and reading. She loved animals, and always had cats in her life.

The lights of her life were her grandsons, Jacob Hyatt and Joshua Beckett, for whom she cared during their younger years. She was particularly proud of watching them grow and marveling at all their achievements.

A consummate caregiver her entire life, Patty cared for both her father, William, during his battle with Parkinson’s Disease, and her husband, Bob, during his illness with Alzheimer’s Disease until the final stages took them to nursing care. Since her father’s death in 2007, she was the primary caregiver of her mother, Celia, allowing her to remain in her home until her death in February of this year at age 92.

Following the death of her husband Bob in 2010, Patty struck up a lasting friendship with Thomas Kelley of Lockport, NY. Tom made trips to Maine over the past few years to be with her. She enjoyed sharing with him the beauty of the Maine Coast and they spent many happy times together and kept in touch for hours over the phone. She was thankful for his love and friendship in her life.

Patty’s illness took her to many different care facilities over the past year. She received attentive care at Windward Gardens in Camden, Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, and Maine Medical Center in Portland. During the final stage of her life, she was able to return home to her son Brian’s home for a few weeks, which made her very happy. This was made possible due to the nursing care of her daughter-in-law, Lidia, to whom she was particularly grateful.

Patty was a member of the Ladies American Legion Auxiliary in Thomaston, as well as a Mayflower descendant.

She is survived by her son, Brian Beckett and his wife Lidia of Thomaston; her daughter Melanie and partner Jim Bazin of Thomaston; grandsons Joshua Beckett of Warren and Jacob Hyatt of Thomaston; and granddaughters Viviana, Nashelee, Eileen, and Beverly. She leaves behind several special cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and lifetime friends. An enduring friendship with Jane and Paul Crawford of Gorham, Maine, was always dear to her heart.

Interment at the Village Cemetery, Thomaston will be announced in the spring.
