2265 Elizabeth J. "Bettie" Dodson, 80, an Oak Park native who learned to fly planes during World War II and later became the director of an association of percussion enthusiasts, died of cancer Saturday, Aug. 26, at her home in Houston, said her daughter, Pat. After graduating from Penn Hall Junior College in Pennsylvania, Mrs. Dodson began working at her family's business, Ludwig Drum Co. When World War II broke out, Mrs. Dodson decided to follow her brother and enlist in the Navy. She was stationed at the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipman's School at the University of Notre Dame as a Wave, a Woman Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service. While there, she became interested in taking aviation lessons. The university, then all-male, at first refused but then admitted her because it could not deny enlisted Navy personnel access to classes, her daughter said. Mrs. Dodson earned a pilot's license but didn't do much flying after leaving the Navy when the war ended. She married a Navy lieutenant, James R. Dodson Jr., returned to the Chicago area and her father's company, and had three children. She eventually became the director of the National Association of Rudimental Drummers, a prestigious percussionists association that her father helped found. Mrs. Dodson's daughter remembered her mother as a quick-witted, outgoing woman who loved to tell a good joke. She lived in Barrington for almost 30 years, until she bought a condominium in Naples, Fla. About two years ago, she moved to Houston. Mrs. Dodson is also survived by two sons, J. Robert and Steven R.; a brother, William F. Ludwig Jr.; four grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. A memorial service will be Nov. 4 in Naples. HOLMES, Marguerite "Maggie" Helen (I3785)

2266 Elizabeth J. "Bettie" Dodson, loving daughter, sister, mother and friend, died peacefully at her home in Houston, Texas on August 26, 2000. Formerly of Naples, Florida and Barrington, IL. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, J. Robert and Ann Warshauer Dodson of Houston, TX, Steven R. and Karen Freatman Dodson of Steamboat Springs, CO; a daughter, Patricia Dodson of Winnetka, IL; four grandchildren, Scott and Christopher Dodson, Katherine and Jennifer Harwood; two stepgrandchildren, Collin and Colby Young; a brother and sister-in-law, William F. and Marguarite Ludwig; a niece and nephew, Brooke Crowden and Bill Ludwig. Bettie was born March 23, 1920 in Oak Park, IL to William F. Ludwig (founder of The Ludwig Drum Company, Chicago, IL) and Elsa M. Gunkler Ludwig. She attended Oak Park High School and graduated from Penn Hall Junior College in Pennsylvania. After working for her father at the Drum Company for a year, she enlisted in the Navy. She attended the USNR Midshipmen's School, University of Notre Dame, June 1943 to November 1945. She enrolled in the pilots training class and became the first woman allowed to attend the university. She served for two years as a W.A.V.E., Yoeman First Class. Married, she returned to Chicago to start a family and rejoin the family business. As a Director, she headed up the National Association of Rudimental Drummers (N.A.R.D.), of which she was a proud member. A memorial service will be held at the Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples, Florida on November 4, 2000 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or The Conservancy of Southwest Florida in Naples. LUDWIG, Elizabeth Jeanette "Betty" (I6078)

KELLER, Elizabeth (I35924)

2269 Elizabeth „Betty“ Jean Toy

Elizabeth „Betty“ Jean Toy, 84, ehemalige 62-jährige Einwohnerin von Pacifica, Kalifornien, ist am 25. Juli 2018 friedlich in Lawrence, Kansas, verstorben. B. The Mackey Merry Makers. WINCHENBACH (WINCAPAW), Elva Lee (I53438)

Kate married Charles Edward Waltz on Sept. 28, 1968 in Waldoboro. After a brief residency in Bangor, the couple settled in West Waldoboro where they raised their children Bethany L. Kate met David Hixon in 2002 and they were married on Aug. 16, 2003 at Pemaquid Lighthouse. She welcomed David's children Benjamin and Tess Hixon into her family and to their West Waldoboro home.

Kate served her community as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary, Hospice, Bay Chamber Concerts, and Children's Schools in Rockland, and was an advocate for children and the elderly. Her compassionate nature was exemplified through he r nursing career and lent to her ability to care for her parents and grandparents. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and fundraising events.

She loved cooking, the arts, music, boating, and fishing with her husband and family, attending sporting and school events involving her grandsons, and enjoyed the company of friends; her food and hospitality was legendary. She lit a room with he r smile and laughter; her joy of life embraced everyone and made them feel special. Kate adored her family and holidays, especially Christmas and birthdays.
