He was in his 75th year. A week ago Monday he was obliged to leave his work at the George E. Keith Co. on account of illness. Early this week his illness took a turn for the worse and little hope was extended for his recovery. Commander Groton was born in Waldoboro, Me., Jan. 18, 1847, and had lived in Brockton about 35 years, coming here from Boston. For the past 10 years he had been employed in the heel department at the George E. Keith Shoe Co. plant. Besides his wife he leaves two sons, Percy L. Groton of Avon and C. Merle Groton of this city, and a daughter, Mrs. Alice H. Mattinson, wife of Robert Mattinson, the young couple also living at 235 Boylston street. Mr. Groton also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Miller of this city and Mrs. Annie Marston of Scituate, widow of the late Harry L. Marston of this city; a brother Zenas Groton of Melrose, and five grand-children in Avon. When the Civil war was nearing its close, Mr. Groton, then a lad of 17, was mustered into the service, Nov. 16, 1864, as corporal in Co. M, 4th Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry. Corp. Groton joined his company at Bermud Hundred, Va., and later the company was joined to Gen. Butler\'s forces at Dutch Gap, where it remained until the fall of Richmond. Later the company participated in the destruction of High Bridge, the battle resulting in the defeat of the Confederates and hastening the termination of the war. Corp. Groton was discharged from the service Nov. 14, 1865, five months after the surrender of Lee\'s army. Mr. Groton\'s father, William A. Groton, was also a soldier in the Civil war. He died in 1867 and was buried at sea. Mr. Groton joined Fletcher Webster Post in June, 1911, and was elected commander Dec. 3, 1919, and installed the following January. He served several times as chief marshal of the Memorial day parade. He was exceedingly patriotic and besides his membership in the G.A.R. held membership in the Sons of Veterans. His son, C. Merle Groton, served in the world war. Mr. Groton was prominent in the Olivet Memorial church, where the funeral services will be held. The G.A.R. ritual will be performed. Essentially a home-loving man, he was never happier than when surrounded by his family. He was a man of genial disposition and sterling integrity and held the respect of all with whom he was associated. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon, with interment in Coweeset cemetery. Candid and decided in the expression of his opinions, prompt, fearless and judicious in the discharge of duty. Highly respected as a citizen, few men, in any community, have received and retained for so long a time the confidence of the people. Practically benevolent and public spirited, ever giving his influence on the side of virtue, morality and religion. Many who have enjoyed his society abroad, or partaken of the cheerful hospitalities of his house, will remember his manly form, gentlemanly bearing, general conversation, and the fund of useful information he was ever ready to impart. As a husband, father and friend he possessed those amiable, kind and endearing qualities which make happy and joyous the domestic qualities which make happy and joyous the domestic circle. As a christian, he exemplified the religion of Jesus more by his consistent life and conversation than by any outward profession. The infirmaties of age came gradually upon him. He remarked, a few weeks previous to his death, that his faculties were impaired, his usefulness ended; he was now ready and waiting his summons to depart. Lotti erkrankte an TBC. In den Bela-Lugosi-Horrorfilmen The Return of the Vampire und Scared to Death übernahm Varno ebenfalls größere Aufgaben. She was born at Dutch Neck, December 7, 1910, the daughter of Reverend Herman R. and Carrie Burns Winchenbaugh. As a teenager she moved with her family to Rockland where she graduated from Rockland High School in 1929. During her youth she frequently accompanied her father as he preached at various churches in the area, most notably South Thomaston and Spruce Head. Trained as a secretary, Mrs. Poletti worked for eight years for the M.B. and C.O. Perry Coal Company in Rockland. She met her future husband, Constantine Poletti, while he was stationed with the U.S. Navy in Rockland during World War II. In 1944 she followed him to Florida where she stayed with friends until they were married in Miami in May of 1944. Later they left Miami for Sturgeon, WI, where they remained for several months while the ship Mr. Poletti was assigned to was being built. During this time Mrs. Poletti worked as a secretary to a ship\'s officer until the ship left for New Orleans, LA, where the couple spent several months until the ship left for Oakland, CA. While in Oakland, Mrs. Poletti worked in the shipyard as a secretary for the Pacific Overseas Air Transport Command. Among her duties she wrote letters to servicemen overseas as dictated by an officer. During these months away from Rockland, Mrs. Poletti kept in touch with family, mostly her sister, Evangeline, also a trained secretary. Their letters were unusual as they corresponded to each other in shorthand. When Mr. Poletti\'s ship, the USS Pontotoc was commissioned in 1945 at San Francisco, departing shortly thereafter for active duty in the Pacific, Mrs. Poletti returned to Maine. When her husband returned after World War II they settled in Quincy, MA where he worked at the Boston Post Office and she was employed at a photo laboratory. During these years they acquired family property at Spruce Head Island where they spent summers. Following their respective retirements, they relocated to Stuart, FL while maintaining their summer residence in Spruce Head. During their 48 years of marriage, until Mr. Poletti\'s death in 1990, the couple took 21 cruises, including to Alaska, Panama, South America and the Caribbean. Mrs. Poletti created and painted numerous ceramic figures that decorated not only the cottage at Spruce Head, but in later years, her residence at Bartlett Woods Assisted Living Facility in Rockland. Over the past six years, she has become especially attached to the residents and staff at Bartlett Woods where she received extraordinary and loving care during her illness. Besides her husband, Mrs. Poletti was predeceased by six brothers, Gabriel, Basil, Benedict, Ensign, Exavier, and Manual Winchenbaugh and two sisters, Evangeline Sylvester and Eleanor Paquin. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Theodore W. Sylvester, Jr. and his wife Natalie, of Owls Head, Kay Sylvester of Thomaston, Sandra Sylvester of Duluth, GA, Sara Tavares and her husband Jerry of Sun City West, AZ and Bette Paquin of Novato, CA. Burial will be in Dutch Neck Cemetery. (Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home) ROCKLAND - Virginia Dare (Winchenbaugh) Poletti, 103, died peacefully, Sunday, May 18, 2014 at her home.
